6 Tips for New ESL Teachers

1) Be open-minded. Remember that you are not only teaching, but living in a country different from your own. People who have previous travel experience often find it easier to adjust to their new life, simply because they know not to expect everything to be the same as it is at home
2) Be prepared. Know that you are not going to find all of the comforts of home so be ready to make adjustments. Try and find stores that will carry the foods you are looking for, or places where you can be entertained so as to take your mind off of things
3) Learn how to enjoy a simpler life. Since TV might not even be in English where you are, you will have to find other ways to spend your time. Explore your new city, and find something that will occupy you in your free time
4) Make as many friends as possible. Newly found friendships are one of the greatest rewards that teaching abroad can offer, so take advantage of it. The people that you meet will all be doing the same thing, so finding and making friends should be quite easy for you
5) Don’t be judgemental. At first you will notice things that people do that will not make sense to you at all; don’t hold this against them but try and understand the reason behind it
6) Stay as long as possible. Once you get on your feet you will realize the full extent of what it is to teach and live in another country; don’t rush home, as you might not have the chance to do it again for several years, if at all
